Are Scented Candles Safe for Dogs and Cats

Your furry friends are a part of your family and there safety is super important.

Which begs the question, are scented candles safe for dogs and cats?

The answer? No, not really. Candles are intended for humans, not animals and your furry friends have no knowledge of safety or indeed fire! There's also the issue of...

Perfume Sensitivity
Let's not forget, animals have a keen sense of smell in general. Dogs for example, they can smell a sausage being cooked from several rooms away!

Humans, unfortunately, do not possess the best sense of smell. In fact, our olfactory senses are usually stimulated by only the strongest of aromas, which may not be ideal for your pet pooch.

In general, most scented candles or reed diffuser won't cause any major harm to pets in the short term but, of course, we always recommend you keep an eye on your pets when using a new scented product. Any sign of sickness, please remove the candle/diffuser and dispose in accordance with your local regulations - your pet does not agree with the ingredients.

All Country & Cove candles use natural soy wax, we also use Vegan Certified base oils in our diffusers, limiting the amount of toxins and chemicals released in your home environment.

Hidden Dangers
Candles and reed diffusers are especially a risk around cats - they can climb on to surfaces, book shelves - they're just mischievous and have an uncanny habit of knocking things from a great height, just to see what happens. You definitely DO NOT want a reed diffuser to be smashed on the floor, with glass and diffuser oil all over your carpet!

We always ask our customers to keep our products well away from children and pets for obvious reasons. They have no understanding of the dangers, they can accidentally knock burning candles on the floor or smash diffusers on your new carpet - creating a hazard for other pets or indeed children in the household.

Remember to only ever light candles when you are present in the room and extinguish completely on leaving, ensure reed diffusers are kept high up and out of sight - well away from areas that cats or dogs 'hang out' and well away from a source of ignition - we often see people placing them on a mantelpiece above an open fireplace and that's just REALLY BAD, do not do this!

At the end of the day, scented candles and reed diffusers are intended for adults only, to perfume a living space. You can of course purchase pet friendly home fragrance products but again, you're going to be dealing with either a flame or a liquid which usually contains some form of chemicals. It's always best to be extra cautious around pets and young children.
